SEÑORAS

Por las mañanas acostumbro

a pasar por la cafetería,

me tomo dos cafés -uno contra mi espalda-

entre las limpiadoras que se duermen

sobre su propio desayuno.

Al otro lado de la barra

conversan las señoras,

las dueñas de las tiendas de mi barrio;

se llaman por teléfono,

son admiradas por ejecutivos,

hacen planes para pintarse las uñas.

Sus ojos no contienen desamparo,

sus cerebros no se deshacen

enhebrando palabras, ni átomos, ni perlas.

Las sigo y compro el Marie Claire,

las imito, finjo que soy respectable

en la cola del supermercado.

LADIES

In the morning I am accustomed

to passing through the cafe,

I take two coffees -one for my back-

between cleaning women who fall asleep

in their own breakfasts.

At the other side of the bar

the ladies chat,

the owners of the shops in my neighborhood;

they call each other by phone,

they are admired by executives,

they make plans to paint their nails.

Their eyes do not contain neglect,

their minds are not undone

threading words, or atoms, or pearls.

I follow them and buy Marie Claire,

I imitate them, pretending I am respectable

in line at the supermarket.
